Welcome to LIGHT!

We are so glad that you found us!  LIGHT is an acronym which stands for Learning in Godly Homes Together.  We are a group of Christian families meeting together to provide support for each other as we homeschool our children.  Based primarily in the Sherwood area, our families come from Southwest Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin, Wilsonville, Canby, Aurora, Newberg, and of course Sherwood.  We are not exclusive by location, all are welcome, but you might have to drive a bit more if you live further out of the core area we triangulate from.

We are a member driven group, so activities vary based upon what exciting things people decide to bring to the table.  During the school year, moms meet monthly for encouragement, fellowship and support. Activities for the children include field trips, attending cultural events like theater and symphony performances, service projects, PE class, art class, worship dance and other activities as the parents organize them.

With 50+ children being in Junior and Senior High, our youth enjoy activities led by families.  The kids enjoy being part of this strong youth group.  Our goal is to help our youth build lasting relationships and encourage them on their journey toward adulthood.

During the summer, we meet for park days at various parks in the Sherwood, Wilsonville, Tigard and Tualatin area.  These are fun and mostly unstructured times where the moms can fellowship while the children play. In September we kick off the school year with an all-family potluck with fun and games!

Any Christian homeschool family interested in joining LIGHT is welcome; and as consistent with most homeschool groups, we do ask that you agree to and sign our Code of Conduct and Statement of Faith.

If you have more questions, or are interested in joining this group, we look forward to meeting you!  Please contact lightleadership@gmail.com.

Statement of Purpose

We are parents who are committed to educating our own children. We meet whenever needed to offer mutual support to each other. Our purpose is to share ideas, materials, experiences, and information and to offer friendship and support to one another. We provide social activities and educational opportunities that are best suited to support families. Collectively, we represent several denominations, but we intend that all of our activities and interchange be clearly consistent with Biblical principles.

Statement of Faith

Because of the spiritual unity of believers – by our common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ – individual doctrinal differences, which may exist, outside of the following, should not hinder the unity of Christian home educators.
  1. The Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God (II Timothy 3:16)
  2. There is one God eternally existent in the three people: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Revelation 1:8)
  3. Jesus Christ is God come in the flesh, born of a virgin, being both fully God and fully man, except without sin (John 1:14; Luke 1:26-33)
  4. Man is by nature sinful and is inherently in need of salvation. Salvation is the free gift of God given to the sinner by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His shed blood (Romans 3:23; Acts 4:12; Ephesians 2:8-9)
  5. Jesus Christ’s death provided substitutionary atonement for our sins (Hebrews 10:10, 12; Galatians 2:20; Hebrews 9:11-15; Isaiah 53)
  6. Jesus Christ literally bodily rose from the dead (Matthew 28:6-7; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 11:25; John 20,21).
  7. Jesus Christ will literally come to earth again in the second coming (Luke 21:27-28).
  8. Salvation is provided by the grace of God, by faith in Jesus Christ, not by any type of human merit or good works. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Code of Conduct

When we are involved in activities with LIGHT, it is essential that we keep in mind that we are representing home educators around the nation. Therefore, we feel it is necessary to create a Code of Conduct for ourselves and our children. The following verses have been chosen as a guideline for our behavior.

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.
Philippians 1:27

This means that in all situations we need to remember that those around us need to see Jesus in our actions and words.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Ephesians 4:29

Many possible problems among us will never occur if we use this rule when we speak.

If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Philippians 2:1-4

Putting others first in all we do will strengthen our relationships and glorify our Lord.

On the registration form you and your children will be asked to sign a statement that you have read and are willing to abide by the above guidelines. LIGHT home schoolers are represented each time we are together in public, it is very important that we hold one another accountable to these standards.

OCEANetwork Affiliation

LIGHT is affiliated with OCEANetwork, a non-profit organization in Oregon designed to serve the needs of home educators and also to provide support to home school groups and their leaders.  In the past OCEANetwork has worked hard to preserve the home school freedoms that we currently enjoy in Oregon.  It also provides numerous resources for home schoolers including the annual Oregon Christian Home Education Conference.  Each year we are asked to give a group donation to OCEANetwork.   This donation is included in your registration fee.  Thank you for supporting an organization that has worked very hard for home school families here in Oregon.  For more information about OCEANetwork check out their website at :
